Cancun 2006!

This year we invited the Overlys to join us in Cancun. We had been to their beach house a bunch of times and figured it was time for them to see ours!

We took a trip to Tulum, and the girls tried SCUBA for the first time, but mainly we hung out at the pool and beach and ate some fantasic food. A typical morning was to sleep in, then have breakfast in the room, followed by time on the beach and later lunch in the room. We went out to dinner every night, but stayed on the resort for the most part. It was a quiet week- and the seas were incredibly quiet as well- one day, it was almost without waves! Papa took the boys and Maman sailing on the lagoon, and the women went shopping at a mall (and found some really good prices, surprisingly). We haven't decided on next year's plans yet, but Cancun is always a great time. Posted by Picasa

Oh my, we're getting better at this! Our second trip to catch lobster was quite a success.

To increase our bottom time, we just got certified for Nitrox diving from Down Under Scuba. Nitrox is Oxygen-Enriched air- we were diving on 36% Oxygen (instead of the normal 21% in air) so that we didn't absorb as much Nitrogen (which can cause the bends with lots of diving). We only slightly more bottom time, but the benefit we felt was that we weren't as tired afterwards. Think of athletes who breathe in O2 during a competition- it was kind of like that. So, we were ready to go.

On this trip, we only got in 6 tanks worth of diving. Our first day, we missed a trip because there wasn't room on the boat for us- and day 2 had us skip one of our trips because Frederick managed to shoot a scuba gun in between his fingers, requiring 5 stitches. Scuba 'gun'? Yes, he was told his gun "wasn't big enough", and to try "this gun". 'This' gun was about 6 feet long, and when loaded would launch a 4' spear. In this case, he was attempting to simulate loading the gun (no spear) and was able to stretch the long band on the gun fully- but when it came time to release the tension... whammo- one gun slammed in between middle and ring fingers. Think of stretching a slingshot.. and letting go of the handle and you'll get the picture.

But, a few bits of thread sewn in his hand didn't stop us from going out the next day for our best lobstering yet- On the last day, the three of us (Darryl, Steff and Frederick) hauled up 13 lobster. On our last dive, Steff and Frederick found a 'honeyhole' with 5 lobster hiding in it, but only had time to grab one before it was time to surface.

Thanks for hosting us again, Darrylo!

Team Morehead!

Summer 2006 found three Moreheads on the Washington Swim Team! Erin pulled in her share of points swimming free style, backstroke and breaststroke. Her long, lean physique gives her a decided advantage over most of the competition--she has incredible reach, and just slices through the water. We are looking into a year-round swim program, so that she doesn't lose her edge during the school year.

Aidan swam for the first time on the team this year, which is
pretty amazing--it was only a little earlier this
summer that he was unable to swim a length of the pool. He
has an excellent dive, and is a force to be reckoned with in
freestyle.
Keep up the good work, Aidan!

Griffin, in the proud family tradition, excels at the
backstroke! He has the power stroke, and gets up some
serious speed. Also, he has learned to use the flags near the
end of the pool lane to measure remaining strokes before
meeting the wall--thus, none of that "stop and look" swimming.
He finished first in his heat, and earned some points for his
team!

This was the last swim meet of the year for Team Morehead,
but I sure am looking forward to 2007! Posted by Picasa
